BC Solar Cell Testing Explained: EL vs. IV

Back-contact (BC) solar cells have a different electrode arrangement from conventional front-contact designs. Because their electrical contacts are located on the rear side, choosing suitable inspection and measurement methods is an important part of quality control.

Two useful testing concepts to understand are EL imaging and IV measurement.

What Is EL Testing?

EL stands for electroluminescence. During an EL test, a suitable electrical bias is applied to the cell, and an imaging system captures the light emitted by the device.

The resulting image may reveal certain cracks, interruptions in current pathways, or non-uniform emission patterns.

EL is especially useful when the inspection task requires spatial information about the cell. However, image patterns need to be interpreted carefully, and not every dark or bright region represents the same defect.

What Is IV Testing?

IV stands for current-voltage measurement. The tester records the relationship between current and voltage under defined test conditions.

Depending on the system, the measurement may provide parameters such as Voc, Isc, maximum power, and fill factor.

These results help evaluate electrical performance, but an IV curve alone may not identify the exact physical cause of an abnormal result.

EL vs. IV: The Main Difference

EL answers: Where are there unusual emission patterns that deserve inspection?

IV answers: How does the cell perform electrically under the specified test conditions?

The two methods provide different information, so they can complement each other.

What Should BC Cell Manufacturers Check?

Before purchasing a tester, confirm that the system is suitable for the cell's rear-contact design and that the electrical connection method is appropriate.

Also consider the required test parameters, image quality, sample handling, test procedure, and verification method.

Do not assume that every EL or IV tester designed for conventional cells will automatically work with every BC cell design.
